You may have seen in movies how Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and other stars use it. It is a ‘wooden machine’ with arms and legs used for training. The Muk Jong is used in Chinese martial arts training. It is a wooden dummy paired with Wing Chun, a martial art Bruce Lee once studied. Other martial arts style also use the Muk Jong as it is quite useful. Most Muk Jong dummies are made of wood, the more modern and or low budget models from plastic or steel. .
Muk Jongs have three arms. Each arm represents an arm position. One can do 108 movements with the Muk Jong. In Wing Chun, their Muk Jong dummies have arms and legs to develop fighting abilities and chi at the same time. Some dummies are mounted on walls, in the case of Hong Kong. The older version of dummies was placed on the ground.
Bruce Lee even modified the Muk Jong. He placed a neck and a metal leg. In Choy Lee Fut style there are different Muk Jongs: Chin Jong, Sui Sau Jong, Ma Jong and others. Chin Jong dummies have their top arm move up and down, attached with a rope or something heavy.
And the two center arms stick out, forming a “V”. To help with hand and finger formation, sandbags are hanged on the front and sides. The Sui Sau Jong has a swinging arm with sandbags hanging. This design was to help the students to react quickly to counterattacks. Ma Jong is formed like a horse. If a student pushes it, it moves forward, forcing the student to direct it with a good posture.
Other Choy Lee Fut Jongs are the qiang bao zhuang, a sandbag hanged on the wall; sha bao zhuang, it has one key sandbag attached to two others through a pulley scheme; and others. Though of simple construction, the Muk Jong has proved to be both amazing and striking. This contraption can actually do so much despite of its plain structure, which is why it is remarkable.
A huge misunderstanding of the Muk Jong is that it can help strengthen arms, which is absurd. Hitting a Muk Jong with force is an indication that one does not understand the Muk Jong at all. It is used for deflection exercises. One must around the Muk Jong’s arms and find the area with least resistance. The Muk Jong isn’t also just for improving hand positions. It helps in developing footwork, pose and direction.

It can help develop skills required to locate the place where there is least resistance, swiftly and effortlessly. It can aide you transmit power efficiently. In a fight, your opponent might not get an opportunity to strike you if you trained with the Muk Jong.
